ਭੌਤਿਕ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਜਾਂ ਭੌਤਿਕੀ, ਕੁਦਰਤ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਸ਼ਾਖਾ ਹੈ। ਭੌਤਿਕੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ। ਕੁੱਝ ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਤ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਇਹ ਊਰਜਾ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਊਰਜਾ ਦੇ ਰੂਪਾਂਤਰਣ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਸਬੰਧਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਵੇਚਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਗਤ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਅੰਦਰਲੀਆਂ ਪਰਕਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਧਿਅਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਥਾਨ, ਕਾਲ, ਰਫ਼ਤਾਰ, ਪਦਾਰਥ, ਬਿਜਲਈ, ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼, ਵੱਟ ਅਤੇ ਆਵਾਜ ਇਤਆਦਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਘੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਧਾਂਤ ਸਮੁੱਚੇ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਦਰ ਯੋਗ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਦੇ ਹਰ ਇੱਕ ਅੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਾਗੂ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਦਾ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੀਮਾ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਅਤਿ ਦੁਸ਼ਕਰ ਹੈ। ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਘੱਟ ਵਧ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਤਰਗਤ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੋਰ ਸ਼ਾਖਾਵਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਹੀ ਭੌਤਿਕੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਆਧਾਰਿਤ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਤਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ ਸਿੱਧਾਂਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਨ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭੌਤਿਕੀ ਦਾ ਮਹੱਤਵ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਵੀ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇੰਜਨੀਅਰਿੰਗ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਿਲਪਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਜਨਮਦਾਤੀ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਤੇ ਇਹ ਇਸ ਯੁੱਗ ਦੇ ਸੰਪੂਰਣ ਸਾਮਾਜਕ ਅਤੇ ਆਰਥਕ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਦੀ ਮੂਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਕ ਹੈ। ਬਹੁਤ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਇਸਨ੍ਹੂੰ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਦਾ ਅੰਗ ਮੰਨ ਕੇ ਨੈਚੁਰਲ ਫਿਲਾਸੋਫੀ ਜਾਂ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ, ਪਰ 1870 ਈਸਵੀ ਦੇ ਲੱਗਭੱਗ ਇਸਨ੍ਹੂੰ ਵਰਤਮਾਨ ਨਾਮ ਭੌਤਿਕੀ ਜਾਂ ਫਿਜਿਕਸ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੰਬੋਧਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗੇ। ਹੌਲੀ - ਹੌਲੀ ਇਹ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਉੱਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਦੀ ਤੇਜ ਰਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ, ਅਗਰਗਣਨੀ ਭੌਤਿਕ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਹੈਰਾਨੀ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਹੌਲੀ - ਹੌਲੀ ਇਸਤੋਂ ਅਨੇਕ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਣ ਸ਼ਾਖਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਤਪੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰਾਸਾਇਣਕ ਭੌਤਿਕੀ, ਤਾਰਾ ਭੌਤਿਕੀ, ਜੀਵ ਭੌਤਿਕੀ, ਭੂਭੌਤਿਕੀ, ਨਾਭਿਕੀ ਭੌਤਿਕੀ, ਆਕਾਸ਼ੀ ਭੌਤਿਕੀ ਆਦਿ।

The Arc lamp
An arc lamp or arc light is a lamp that produces light by an electric arc (also called a voltaic arc). The carbon arc light, which consists of an arc between carbon electrodes in air, invented by Humphry Davy in the early 1800s, was the first practical electric light. It was widely used starting in the 1870s for street and large building lighting until it was superseded by the incandescent light in the early 20th century. It continued in use in more specialized applications where a high intensity point light source was needed, such as searchlights and movie projectors until after World War II.
