ਹਾਥੀ (ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਨਾਮ: L. cyclotis (ਅਫਰੀਕੀ ਹਾਥੀ); Elephas maximus (ਏਸ਼ੀਆਈ ਹਾਥੀ)) ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡਾ ਥਣਧਾਰੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨੀ ਜਾਨਵਰ ਹੈ। ਅੱਜ ਐਲੀਫੰਟਿਡੀ (Elephantidae)ਕੁਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੇਵਲ ਦੋ ਪ੍ਰਜਾਤੀਆਂ ਜਿੰਦਾ ਹਨ: ਐਲੀਫਸ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਕਸੋਡਾਂਟਾ। ਤੀਜੀ ਪ੍ਰਜਾਤੀ ਮਮਥਸ ਵਿਲੁਪਤ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਹੈ।[1] ਜੀਵਤ ਦੋ ਪ੍ਰਜਾਤੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਤਿੰਨ ਜਾਤੀਆਂ ਸਿਆਣੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ:- ਲਾਕਸੋਡਾਂਟਾ ਪ੍ਰਜਾਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੋ ਜਾਤੀਆਂ-ਅਫਰੀਕੀ ਖੁੱਲੇ ਮੈਦਾਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਾਥੀ (ਹੋਰ ਨਾਮ: ਬੁਸ਼ ਜਾਂ ਸਵਾਨਾ ਹਾਥੀ) ਅਤੇ ਅਫਰੀਕੀ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਾਥੀ - ਅਤੇ ਐਲੀਫਸ ਪ੍ਰਜਾਤੀ ਦਾ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਜਾਂ ਏਸ਼ੀਆਈ ਹਾਥੀ। [2] ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਕੁੱਝ ਖੋਜਕਾਰ ਦੋਨਾਂ ਅਫਰੀਕੀ ਜਾਤੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਹੀ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਜੇ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਅਫਰੀਕਾ ਦਾ ਹਾਥੀ ਚੌਥੀ ਜਾਤੀ ਹੈ।[3] ਐਲੀਫੰਟਿਡੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਜਾਤੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਜਾਤੀਆਂ ਵਿਲੁਪਤ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਬਹੁਤੀਆਂ ਤਾਂ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਹਿਮਯੁਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਵਿਲੁਪਤ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ ਸਨ, ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਮੈਮਥ ਦਾ ਬੌਣਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਸੰਨ 2000 ਈ ਪੂ ਤੱਕ ਜਿੰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। [4]
ਅੱਜ ਹਾਥੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਜੀਵ ਹੈ।[5] ਹਾਥੀ ਦਾ ਗਰਭ ਕਾਲ 22 ਮਹੀਨਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਜ਼ਮੀਨੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਲੰਬਾ ਹੈ।[6] ਜਨਮ ਸਮੇਂ ਹਾਥੀ ਦਾ ਬੱਚਾ ਕਰੀਬ ੧੦੫ ਕਿਲੋ ਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।[6] ਹਾਥੀ ਅਮੂਮਨ 50 ਤੋਂ 70 ਸਾਲ ਤੱਕ ਜਿੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਦੀਰਘ ਆਯੂ ਹਾਥੀ 82 ਸਾਲ ਦਾ ਦਰਜ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। [7] ਅੱਜ ਤੱਕ ਦਾ ਦਰਜ ਕੀਤਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਹਾਥੀ 1955 ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਗੋਲਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।[8] ਇਸ ਨਰ ਦਾ ਭਾਰ ਲੱਗਭੱਗ 10,900 ਕਿਲੋ ਸੀ, ਅਤੇ ਮੋਢੇ ਤੱਕ ਦੀ ਉਚਾਈ 3. 96 ਮੀਟਰ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਆਮ ਅਫਰੀਕੀ ਹਾਥੀ ਤੋਂ ਲੱਗਭੱਗ ਇੱਕ ਮੀਟਰ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਹੈ।[9] ਇਤਹਾਸ ਦੇ ਸਭਤੋਂ ਛੋਟੇ ਹਾਥੀ ਯੂਨਾਨ ਦੇ ਕ੍ਰੀਟ ਟਾਪੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਛੇ ਜਾਂ ਸੂਰ ਦੇ ਆਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ।[10]
ਏਸ਼ੀਆਈ ਸਭਿਅਤਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਥੀ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਯਾਦ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਕਲਮੰਦੀ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਕਲਮੰਦੀ ਡਾਲਫਿਨ[11][12][13][14] ਅਤੇ ਵਣਮਾਣਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਮੰਨੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।[15][16] ਸਰਸਰੀ ਨਿਰੀਖਣ ਤੋਂ ਭਲੀ-ਭਾਂਤ ਪਤਾ ਚਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਹਾਥੀ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰੀ ਜਾਨਵਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ,[17] ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਸੀਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਝੁੰਡ ਸ਼ਾਵਕ ਜਾਂ ਕਮਜੋਰ ਹਾਥੀ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।[18][19] ਹੁਣ ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਦਖਲ ਅਤੇ ਗ਼ੈਰਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੰਕਟਗ੍ਰਸਤ ਜੀਵ ਹੈ। ਹਾਥੀ ਹੀ ੲਿੱਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਜਾਨਵਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਹਡ਼ਾ ਛਲਾਂਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ੲਿੱਕ ਹਾਥੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਤਿੰਨ ਮੀਲ ਦੀ ਦੂਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਸੁੰਘ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਾਥੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਗੰਧ 3000 ਫੁੱਟ ਤੋਂ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਾਥੀ ਦੇ ਪਤਾਲੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ।
