ਕਾਲਾ ਬਾਂਸਾ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਲਾਬਾਰ ਨਟ, ਅਡੁਲਸਾ', ਅਧਾਤੋਦਾ, ਵਾਸਾ, ਵਾਸਕਾ ਵਜੋਂ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਏਸ਼ੀਆ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਹੈ।[3] ਇਸ ਦਾ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਨਾਮ Justicia adhatoda ਹੈ। ਤਮਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਡਾਥੋਡਾ' ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ 'ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਬੱਕਰੀਆਂ ਨਾ ਛੋਹਦੀਆਂ ਹੋਣ’। ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਇਸ ਤੱਥ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਬੱਕਰੀਆਂ ਵਰਗੇ ਜਾਨਵਰ ਇਸ ਪੌਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੌੜੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਕਾਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ। [ਹਵਾਲਾ ਲੋੜੀਂਦਾ][citation needed]
ਇਸ ਪੌਦੇ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਅਫ਼ਗਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ , ਭਾਰਤ ਉਪ ਮਹਾਂਦੀਪ (ਬੰਗਲਾਦੇਸ਼, ਭਾਰਤ, ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ, ਨੇਪਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੀਲੰਕਾ), ਲਾਓਸ, ਮਿਆਂਮਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਵੀਅਤਨਾਮ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਹੋਰ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਤੇ ਵੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।[4]
ਇਸ ਪੌਦੇ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਰਵਾਇਤੀ ਜੜੀ-ਬੂਟੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।[5]
