ਡਾਊਨ ਸਿੰਡਰੋਮ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਆਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਮੋਸੋਮ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਅਸਧਾਰਨਤਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ।[7] ਇਹ ਹਰ ਸਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ 1,000 ਨਵ ਜੰਮੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਨੂੰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।[1] 2015 ਵਿੱਚ, ਡਾਊਨ ਸਿੰਡਰੋਮ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ 5.4 ਮਿਲੀਅਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ 27,000 ਮੌਤਾਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਸਨ, 1990 ਵਿੱਚ 43,000 ਮੌਤਾਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਸਨ।[9][10][11] ਇਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਜਾਨ ਲੈਂਗਨ ਡਾਊਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ 1866 ਵਿੱਚ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਿੰਡਰੋਮ ਦਾ ਵਰਣਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ.[12] ਹਾਲਾਤ ਦੇ ਕੁਝ ਪਹਿਲੂ 1838 ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਜੀਨ-ਏਟਿਨੀ ਡੋਮੀਨੀਕ ਐਸਕੁਆਰੋਲ ਅਤੇ 1844 ਵਿੱਚ ਐਡੋਵਾਡ ਸੇਗੁਇਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਦੱਸੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ।[13] 1959 ਵਿਚ, ਕ੍ਰੋਮੋਸੋਮ 21 ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਧੂ ਕਾਪੀ ਡਾਊਨ ਸਿੰਡਰੋਮ ਦੀ ਜੈਨੇਟਿਕ ਕਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਖੋਜ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ।[12]

ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਅਤੇ ਲੱਛਣ[ਸੋਧੋ]
