ਰਾਜਪੂਤ, ਜਾਂ ਠਾਕੁਰ,^[1] ਇਹ ਜਾਤਾਂ, ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਥਾਨਕ ਸਮੂਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡਾ ਬਹੁ-ਘਟਕ ਸਮੂਹ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਉਪ-ਮਹਾਂਦੀਪ ਦੇ ਉੱਤਰੀ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਪੰਨ ਹੋਏ ਵੰਸ਼ਾਵਲੀ ਵੰਸ਼ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਧਾਰਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ, ਰਾਜਪੁੱਤਰ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਪੰਨ ਹੋਣਾ ਗੁੰਮਰਾਹਕੁੰਨ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਰਾਜਪੂਤ ਕੁਝ ਸ਼ਾਸਕ ਕਬੀਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਸਨ, ਪਰ ਰਾਜਪੂਤ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਗਿਣਤੀ ਆਮ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ ਸੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਮਦਨ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਸਰੋਤ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਸੀ।^[2]^[3] ਰਾਜਪੂਤ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਯੋਧਾਪਣ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਪਿਤਰੀ ਕਬੀਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਵਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ: ਕਈ ਕਬੀਲੇ ਰਾਜਪੂਤ ਦਰਜੇ ਦਾ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਦਾਅਵੇ ਸਰਵ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਲਗਭਗ ਸਾਰੇ ਰਾਜਪੂਤ ਕਬੀਲੇ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਜਾਂ ਚਰਵਾਹਾ ਭਾਈਚਾਰਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਪੰਨ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ।

ਰਾਜਪੂਤ ਆਬਾਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਰਾਜਪੂਤ ਰਾਜ ਉੱਤਰੀ, ਪੱਛਮੀ, ਮੱਧ ਅਤੇ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਾਜਸਥਾਨ, ਦਿੱਲੀ, ਹਰਿਆਣਾ, ਗੁਜਰਾਤ, ਪੂਰਬੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ, ਪੱਛਮੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ, ਉੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼, ਪੱਛਮੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ, ਹਿਮਾਚਲ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼, ਜੰਮੂ, ਉੱਤਰਾਖੰਡ, ਬਿਹਾਰ, ਮੱਧ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼, ਸਿੰਧ ਅਤੇ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ।
