ਸਮੂਹ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਕੀਮੀਡੀਅਨਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਦਿਆਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਕੀਮੀਡੀਅਨਜ਼ ਯੂਜ਼ਰ ਗਰੁੱਪ ਵੱਲੋਂ 21 ਅਤੇ 22 ਮਾਰਚ 2026 ਨੂੰ ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਵਿਖੇ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਦੋ-ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ (Capacity Building) ਵਰਕਸ਼ਾਪ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਰਕਸ਼ਾਪ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਮਕਸਦ ਸਾਡੇ ਸਰਗਰਮ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਦੇ 'ਆਨ-ਵਿਕੀ' ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ 'ਆਫ-ਵਿਕੀ' ਹੁਨਰਾਂ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਕਮਿਊਨੀਕੇਸ਼ਨ, ਲੀਡਰਸ਼ਿਪ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਰਟਨਰਸ਼ਿਪ) ਨੂੰ ਨਿਖਾਰਨਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਕੀਮੀਡੀਆ ਸੰਸਥਾ ਅਤੇ OKI (IIIT-H) ਦੇ ਸਟਾਫ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਮਾਹਿਰ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਣਗੇ।

Request for Comment: VisualEditor automatic reference names

Hi, I’m Johannes from Wikimedia Deutschland’s Technical Wishes team. Apologies for writing in English. ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਰਜਮਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਦਦ ਕਰੋ! We are considering to work on Community Wishlist/W17: Improve VE references' automatic names and reuse. This has been a long-term issue for wikitext editors (see e.g. en:WP:VisualEditor/Named references) which has been among the top-voted wishes in several Community Wishlist Surveys, e.g. 2017, 2019, 2022 or 2023.

We would like your input on the solutions proposed on our project page: m:WMDE Technical Wishes/References/VisualEditor automatic reference names. We are considering several options, which can be combined if desired by the community.

• Changing the default pattern for automatically generated reference names (currently ":n", e.g. ":0", ":1"...) to use the reference type instead (e.g. "book_reference-1").
• Providing a simple mechanism for communities to configure a different default name.
• Generating automatic reference names based on the domain name (if it’s a web citation).
• Generating automatic reference names based on template parameters (e.g. "title" or "last"+"first") – defined by the community.

Please note: We will only implement a solution if there’s clear consensus among the global community. Our intention is not to build the perfect solution, but to find a simple and lean one that alleviates the pain caused by auto generated names. We are aware that some experienced VisualEditor users might prefer an option to manually change reference names in VisualEditor, but such a UX intervention is difficult to achieve across reference types and thus out of scope for our team, we can only improve the auto-naming mechanism. We are happy about suggestions for improving certain details of the proposed solutions. Any other feedback and alternative proposals are also welcome – even though it’s out of scope for us, it might still be relevant for future work on this topic.

Please support us interpreting consensus by clearly indicating your opinion (e.g. by using support/neutral/oppose templates). We are aware of en:WP:NOTVOTE, but given that we are facilitating this discussion with users from different wikis, potentially commenting in their native language, clearly indicating your position helps us avoid misunderstandings.

The initiative aims to promote knowledge about Ukrainian culture abroad by creating and improving Wikipedia articles in multiple languages. This year marks the sixth edition of the campaign, which will focus on contemporary culture, making today’s artistic voices and practices more visible to international audiences.

Action Required: Update templates/modules for electoral maps (Migrating from P1846 to P14226)

Hello everyone,

This is a notice regarding an ongoing data migration on Wikidata that may affect your election-related templates and Lua modules (such as Module:Itemgroup/list).

The Change:
Currently, many templates pull electoral maps from Wikidata using the property P1846, combined with the qualifier P180: Q19571328.

We are migrating this data (across roughly 4,000 items) to a newly created, dedicated property: P14226.

What You Need To Do:
To ensure your templates and infoboxes do not break or lose their maps, please update your local code to fetch data from P14226 instead of the old P1846 + P180 structure. A list of pages was generated using Wikimedia Global Search.

Deadline:
We are temporarily retaining the old data on P1846 to allow for a smooth transition. However, to complete the data cleanup on Wikidata, the old P1846 statements will be removed after May 1, 2026. Please update your modules and templates before this date to prevent any disruption to your wiki's election articles.

Indic Wikimedia Hackathon Hyderabad 2026 - Call for Applications

The Indic MediaWiki Developers User Group is pleased to announce the upcoming Indic Wikimedia Hackathon Hyderabad 2026, scheduled to take place in Hyderabad from 26 - 28 June 2026 (with 25 June as Day 0), in collaboration with the IIITH-OKI and OSDG club at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad.

Wikimedia hackathons are spaces for developers, designers, content editors, and other community stakeholders to collaborate on building technical solutions that help improve tools, workflows, and overall user experience across Wikimedia projects.

The hackathon is intended for:

• Technical contributors active in the Wikimedia technical ecosystem, including developers, maintainers (admins/interface admins), translators, designers, researchers, documentation writers, etc.
• Content contributors having an in-depth understanding of technical issues in their home Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wiktionary, etc.
• Contributors from other FOSS communities or those who have participated in Wikimedia events in the past and would like to begin contributing to Wikimedia technical spaces.

Participants may work on curated hackathon tasks and are also encouraged to propose their own ideas, supported by a clear problem statement and a proposed approach.

To encourage participation and support promising contributions, scholarships will be provided to support participants’ related expenses.

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਕੀਮੀਡੀਆ ਪ੍ਰੋਜੈਕਟਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਈ ਨੀਤੀ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੀ ਚਰਚਾ ਦੇ ਸੰਦਰਭ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੇਰਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਆਕਰਣਕ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਦਿਆਂ ਪੜਨਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਨੀਤੀ ਬਣਾਈ ਜਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ “you” ਵਰਗਾ ਇਕ ਤਟਸਥ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੈ, ਜਦਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ “ਤੂੰ”, “ਤੁਸੀਂ”, “ਆਪ” ਆਦਿ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਵਿਆਕਰਣ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਆਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਜਕ ਵਿਵਹਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਹਰ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਪੂਰਵਕ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਣਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੀ ਆਮ ਲਿਖਤ, ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਤਾ, ਅਕਾਦਮਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ “ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ”, “ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ” ਵਰਗੇ ਪੜਨਾਂਵ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਵਿਕੀਪੀਡੀਆ ’ਤੇ “ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ” ਵਰਤਣਾ ਨਿਰਪੱਖਤਾ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੀ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਨਮਾਨਜਨਕ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਈ ਰੀਤ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ। ਨਿਰਪੱਖਤਾ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਬੇਅਦਬੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।

ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਝਾਅ ਹੈ ਕਿ:

•ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ “ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ”, “ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ”, “ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ” ਵਰਗੇ ਆਦਰਸੂਚਕ ਪੜਨਾਂਵ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਣ।

• ਲੇਖਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਵਨਾਤਮਕ ਜਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰਾਤਮਕ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਣਾਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ “ਮਹਾਨ”, “ਪੂਜਨੀਕ”, “ਅਵਤਾਰੀ”, “ਸਤਿਕਾਰਯੋਗ” ਆਦਿ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ, ਜਦ ਤੱਕ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਨਾ ਹੋਣ।

• ਨੀਤੀ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ, ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ, ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਕਾਲੀ ਜਨਤਕ ਹਸਤੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਇੱਕੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਹੋਵੇ।

• ਜਿੱਥੇ ਸੰਭਵ ਹੋਵੇ, ਲੇਖਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਪੜਨਾਂਵ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਲਿਖਤ ਹੋਰ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਕੋਸ਼ੀ ਰਹੇ।

ਮੇਰੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਨੀਤੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਮਰਿਆਦਾ, ਪਾਠਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਕੀਪੀਡੀਆ ਦੀ ਨਿਰਪੱਖਤਾ — ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਇੱਕ ਸੰਤੁਲਨ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

Hello everyone! I am glad to inform you that as the next step in the Parser Unification project, Parsoid will soon be turned on as the default article renderer on your wiki. We are gradually increasing the number of wikis using Parsoid, with the intention of making it the default wikitext parser for MediaWiki's next long-term support release. This will make our wikis more reliable and consistent for editors, readers, and tools to use, as well as making the development of future wikitext features easier.

If this disrupts your workflow, don’t worry! You can still opt out through a user preference or turn Parsoid off on the current page using the Tools submenu, as described in the Extension:ParserMigration documentation.

There is more information about our roll-out strategy available, including the testing done before we turn on Parsoid for a new wiki.

We hope you're doing well!

The Indic_MediaWiki_Developers_User_Group (IMDUG) is reaching out to Wikimedia communities across India to strengthen collaboration and better understand the technical needs of different language communities. Last year, we piloted Indic_Community_Task_Force_2025 initiative by engaging with two language communities to understand their technical challenges and identify opportunities for collaboration. Based on our learnings, experience, and the valuable insights we received, we are expanding the initiative this year to reach all Indic communities. Our goal is to reach every community and understand where technical support is most needed.

What are we looking for?

We invite your community to nominate one or two points of contact and share:

• The name of your Wikimedia community.
• A primary and alternate community contact.
• Telegram usernames of the nominated contacts.
• A brief overview of your community's technical challenges, needs, or priorities.

This could include areas such as:

• Editing or patrolling workflows that could be improved.
• Gadgets, tools, or bots that your community needs.
• Template or interface-related challenges.
• Technical barriers faced by contributors.
• Any other broad technical priorities for your community.

How to participate

Please fill out the community response form by 18th August.

What happens next?

The information collected will help us:

The Wiki Loves Villages campaign 2026 starts on 15th August 2026, so get ready to contribute! This initiative aims to expand and enhance content and media about villages across all Wikimedia projects, creating a comprehensive, open-access knowledge base. Campaign Focus: A. Expand Wikipedia articles about Villages in India in multiple languages B. Improve content quality with citations, images, and comprehensive information C. Populate Wikimedia Commons with freely licensed media about a village D. Enrich Wikidata with structured information about Village-related topics We invite you to contribute by writing new articles, enhancing existing ones, uploading media, or organizing data on Wikidata. This initiative aims to expand and enhance freely licensed images and other media of medicinal plants in and around our surroundings. Campaign Focus: A. Add freely licensed images of medicinal plants. B. Improve description of existing medicinal plants. C. Improve depictions of images. D. Improve wikidata items.
