ਜਰਮਨ ਲੋਕ German: Deutsche ਜਰਮਨੀ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਜਾਂ ਵਸਨੀਕ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਾਂ ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਲੋਕ ਜੋ ਜਰਮਨ ਮੂਲ ਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਾਂ ਜਰਮਨ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ।[1][2] ਦੂਜੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਯੁੱਧ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ 1949 ਵਿੱਚ ਲਾਗੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਜਰਮਨੀ ਦਾ ਸੰਵਿਧਾਨ, ਇੱਕ ਜਰਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਜਰਮਨ ਨਾਗਰਿਕ ਵਜੋਂ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।[3] 19ਵੀਂ ਅਤੇ 20ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ, ਜਰਮਨ ਪਛਾਣ 'ਤੇ ਚਰਚਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ, ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ, ਵੰਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਧਾਰਨਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਬਦਬਾ ਰਿਹਾ।[4] ਅੱਜ, ਜਰਮਨ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਜਰਮਨ ਪਛਾਣ ਦੇ ਮਾਪਦੰਡ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।[5] ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਰਮਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੁੱਲ ਸੰਖਿਆ ਦਾ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ਾ 100 ਤੋਂ 150 ਮਿਲੀਅਨ ਤੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਜਰਮਨੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।[6]

Unless otherwise provided by a law, a German within the meaning of this Basic Law is a person who possesses German citizenship or who has been admitted to the territory of the German Reich within the boundaries of 31 December 1937 as a refugee or expellee of German ethnic origin or as the spouse or descendant of such person.
