When used with the "This is a redirect" (Redr) template:

Template {{This is a redirect}} may be used to add from one to seven rcat templates, along with their parameters and categories, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation page below.

When used by itself:

• This is a redirect from a modification of the target's title; for example, its words are rearranged, or punctuation in the name is changed. In cases of modification from distinctly longer or shorter names, please use {{R from long name}} or {{R from short name}}, respectively. For more information follow the bold category link.
  • Use this rcat instead of {{R from other capitalisation}} and {{R from plural}} in namespaces other than mainspace for those types of modification.

Usage

Use this rcat template in any namespace.

• This redirect category (rcat) template populates Category:Redirects from modifications. Add this rcat to a redirect in the following manner:

Template {{Redr}} is an alias for the This is a redirect template, which may be used to add up to seven appropriate rcats, along with their parameters, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation on its template page and its comparison page. This rcat may also tag a redirect individually:

#REDIRECT [[(target page name)]]

This is in accord with instructions found at Wikipedia:REDCAT.

• Use this rcat to tag any redirect in any namespace that is a modification of the target's title; for example, its words are rearranged, or punctuation in the name is changed, with a hyphen (-), without a hyphen, etc.
• If the redirect is from a title including the numeral form of a number to a title with the worded form, use the template {{R from numerals}} instead. If it is from the worded form to the numeral form, then use {{R to numerals}}.
• In cases of modification from distinctly shorter or longer names, instead please use {{R from short name}} or {{R from long name}}, respectively.
• Since rcats like {{R from other capitalisation}} and {{R from plural}} are only used in main-article namespace, the R from modification rcat is useful for other capitalisations, plurals, etc., in other namespaces.
• This template should not be used with {{R from transliteration}}, which populates a subcategory.

Parameter

• This rcat takes a single optional parameter, |1= (a.k.a. "reason"), that changes the phrase "the target's title", after "This is a redirect from a modification of", to something else. This is needed if the redirect is from a modification of some term other than the target title, e.g. an alternative name or subtopic. For example, the redirect Direct to digitalDirect-to-video#Digital releases can be tagged as:

#REDIRECT [[Direct-to-video#Digital releases]]

where {{R from alternative hyphenation}} is an alias of {{R from modification}}. This will make the template read:

"This is a redirect from a modification of the Direct-to-digital redirect;...", (which uses hyphens instead of spaces).

Tagging the same redirect individually with those rcats appears on the edit screen as:

Printworthiness

• In main-article namespace, many redirects from modified page titles are considered unprintworthy; however, there are many others that are printworthy, so there is no default sort for printworthiness. At some point in the future, Jimmy Wales wants to make more printed versions of Wikipedia encyclopedia articles. Some rcats automatically populate either Category:Printworthy redirects or Category:Unprintworthy redirects by default. Others, like this rcat, do not, and that means it is up to editors to choose which of those categories, Printworthy or Unprintworthy, is appropriate and should be populated. The rcats that are used separately to populate those categories are:

• {{R printworthy}} and
• {{R unprintworthy}}

• Template {{This is a redirect}} will accept these rcats just like any other.
