ਬੰਧੂਆ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਜ਼ੇ ਦੀ ਗੁਲਾਮੀ ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ , ਇੱਕ ਕਰਜ਼ੇ ਜਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀ ਲਈ ਮੁੜ-ਭੁਗਤਾਨ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਵਜੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਕਰਾਰਨਾਮਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਥੇ ਮੁੜ ਅਦਾਇਗੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਰਤਾਂ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਜਾਂ ਉਚਿਤ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਕਰਜ਼ਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ 'ਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਨਿਯੰਤਰਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।।ਕਰਜ਼ੇ ਦੀ ਮੁੜ ਅਦਾਇਗੀ ਅਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਤ ਮੰਨ ਲਈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।[1][2] ਬੰਧੂਆ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀ ਦਰ ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀ ਜਾਰੀ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਵਰਤਮਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ, ਬੰਧੂਆ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਇੱਕ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ਨ 8।1 ਮਿਲੀਅਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮੀ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਆਮ ਢੰਗ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਕਿ 2005 ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਤਰਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਲੇਬਰ ਆਰਗੇਨਾਈਜ਼ੇਸ਼ਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹਵਾਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।[3] ਬੰਧੂਆ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ " ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਗੁਲਾਮੀ " ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਲਾਮੀ ਦੇ ਖਾਤਮੇ ਲਈ ਪੂਰਕ ਸੰਮੇਲਨ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਥਾ ਨੂੰ ਖਤਮ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।[2][4][5]

ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਥਾ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਮੁੱਖ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਏਸ਼ੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਪ-ਸਹਾਰਾ ਅਫਰੀਕਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਚਲਿਤ ਹੈ, ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਗੁਲਾਮੀ ਦੇ ਖਾਤਮੇ ਦੇ ਪੂਰਕ ਸੰਮੇਲਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਧਿਰਾਂ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਭਵਿੱਖਬਾਣੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ 84 ਤੋਂ 88% ਬੰਧੂਆ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਏਸ਼ੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ[4][6] ਇਸਤਗਾਸਾ ਦੀ ਘਾਟ ਜਾਂ ਇਸ ਜੁਰਮ ਦੀ ਨਾਕਾਫੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਚਲਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਕਾਰਨ ਹਨ।[7]

ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਕੌਮਾਂਤਰੀ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ ਜੱਥੇਬੰਦੀ ਨੇ 1930 ਦੇ ਜਬਰੀ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ ਸੰਮੇਲਨ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜਬਰੀ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਲੇਖ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਗੁਲਾਮੀ ਦੇ ਖਾਤਮੇ ਵੱਲ ਸੰਗਠਿਤ ਧਿਆਨ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਖਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਕਰਜ਼ੇ ਦੇ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਸਮੀ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਗੁਲਾਮੀ ਦੇ ਖਾਤਮੇ ਦੇ ਪੂਰਕ ਸੰਮੇਲਨ ਸੰਨ1956 ਵਿੱਚ ਆਇਆ ਸੀ।[1][2]

ਜਦੋਂ ਕਰਜ਼ੇ ਦੀ ਅਦਾਇਗੀ ਲਈ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਮਾਲਕ ਅਕਸਰ ਗੈਰ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਆਜ਼ ਦਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਗੈਰ-ਵਾਜਬ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਲਈ ਬੰਧੂਆ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਛੱਡਣਾ ਅਸੰਭਵ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜਿਸ ਰਫਤਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਮੂਲ ਰਕਮ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਘੱਟ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਦਰ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਆਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਰਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਓਨਾ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।[8] ਜਦੋਂ ਬੰਧੂਆ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਕਰਜ਼ੇ ਅਕਸਰ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।[9]
