ਦ ਸਰਪੇਂਟ ਐਂਡ ਦ ਰੋਪ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਓ ਦਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਵਲ ਹੈ।[1] ਇਹ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ 1960 ਵਿੱਚ ਜੌਨ ਮਰੇ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਇੱਕ ਸਵੈ-ਜੀਵਨੀ ਸ਼ੈਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਿਆ, ਇਹ ਨਾਵਲ ਹੋਂਦ, ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਦੀ ਪੂਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਕਲਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਹੈ।[2] ਨਾਵਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁੱਖ ਪਾਤਰ ਰਾਮਾਸਵਾਮੀ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਦਾਂਤਿਕ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਦਿ ਸ਼ੰਕਰਾ ਦੇ ਗੈਰ-ਦਵੈਤਵਾਦ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।[3] ਇਹ ਪਰਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਇਮੀਗ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਮੱਸਿਆਵਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਨਜਿੱਠਦਾ ਹੈ।[4]
ਇਸ ਨਾਵਲ ਨੂੰ 1964 ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਕਾਦਮੀ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਮਿਲਿਆ।[5]
ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਅਰਧ ਆਤਮਕਥਾਤਮਕ ਨਾਵਲ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਰਾਮਾਸਵਾਮੀ ਦੀ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੈ-ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਖੋਜ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਖੋਜ ਦਾ ਵਰਣਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
