ਗਣਿਤ ਜਾਂ ਹਿਸਾਬ (ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ: ਮਾਤਰਾ (ਗਿਣਤੀ)[1] ਸੰਰਚਨਾ,[2] ਸਥਾਨ,[1] ਅਤੇ ਪਰਿਵਰਤਨ ਵਰਗੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਅਮੂਰਤ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।[3][4][5] ਹਿਸਾਬਦਾਨਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਦਾਰਸ਼ਨਿਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਦੀ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਾ-ਖੇਤਰ ਬਾਰੇ ਬਹਿਸ ਦਾ ਖੇਤਰ ਬੜਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਅਮੂਰਤ ਜਾਂ ਨਿਰਾਕਾਰ (abstract) ਅਤੇ ਨਿਗਮਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਤ੍ਰਾਵਾਂ, ਪਰਿਮਾਣਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਰੂਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਪਸੀ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ, ਗੁਣ, ਸੁਭਾਉ ਆਦਿ ਦਾ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗਣਿਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਈ ਸ਼ਾਖਾਵਾਂ ਹਨ: ਅੰਕ-ਗਣਿਤ, ਬੀਜਗਣਿਤ, ਅੰਕੜਾ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ, ਰੇਖਾਗਣਿਤ, ਤਿਕੋਣਮਿਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਲਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਿਪੁੰਨ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਜਾਂ ਖੋਜ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਸਾਬਦਾਨ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਵੀਹਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਹਿਸਾਬਦਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਦਾਰਸ਼ਨਿਕ ਬਰਟੇਂਡ ਰਸਲ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ‘‘ਹਿਸਾਬ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਕਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ, ਨਾ ਹੀ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਪਤਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੋ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਸੱਚ ਵੀ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ।’’ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਕੁੱਝ ਅਮੂਰਤ ਸੰਕਲਪਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਯਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੰਕਲਨ ਮਾਤਰ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਸਗੋਂ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਮੂਲਾਧਾਰ ਹੈ।
