ਜੰਗਲ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਖੇਤਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੇ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਾਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ[1] ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੈਂਕੜੇ ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਸਹੀ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਘਣਤਾ, ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਚਾਈ, ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ, ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣਕ ਕਾਰਜ ਵਰਗੇ ਗੁਣ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।[2][3][4] ਵਿਆਪਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਵਰਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ[5][6] ਖੁਰਾਕ ਅਤੇ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਸੰਗਠਨ ਦੀ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, 2006 ਵਿੱਚ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਢੱਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਖੇਤਰ 4 billion hectares (9.9×109 acres) (15 ਮਿਲੀਅਨ ਵਰਗ ਮੀਲ) ਜਾਂ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਲਗਭਗ 30 ਪ੍ਰਤੀਸ਼ਤ ਭੂਮੀ ਸੀ।

ਜੰਗਲ ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਈਕੋਸਿਸਟਮ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੰਡੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।[7] ਜੰਗਲ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਜੀਵ-ਮੰਡਲ ਦੇ ਕੁੱਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਇਮਰੀ ਉਤਪਾਦਨ ਦਾ 75% ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਪੌਦ-ਜੀਵ-ਪੁੰਜ ਦਾ 80% ਹਿੱਸਾ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਖਾਤੇ ਹੈ। ਨੈੱਟ ਪ੍ਰਾਇਮਰੀ ਉਤਪਾਦਨ ਦਾ ਅਨੁਮਾਨ ਤਪਤਖੰਡੀ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਦਾ 21.9 ਗੀਗਾਟਨ ਕਾਰਬਨ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਸਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ੀਤੋਸ਼ਣ ਜੰਗਲ ਦਾ 8.1 ਗੀਗਾਟਨ,, ਬਰਫੀਲੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਦਾ 2.6 ਗੀਗਾਟਨ ਕਾਰਬਨ ਹੈ।

ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਅਕਸ਼ਾਂਸ਼ਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਚਾਈਆਂ 'ਤੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਵੱਖੋ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਈਕੋਜ਼ੋਨ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ : ਧਰੁਵੀ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਬਰਫੀਲੇ ਜੰਗਲ, ਭੂ-ਮੱਧ ਰੇਖਾ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਤਪਤਖੰਡੀ ਜੰਗਲ ਅਤੇ ਮੱਧ ਅਕਸ਼ਾਂਸ਼ਾਂ ਤੇ ਸ਼ੀਤੋਸ਼ਣ ਜੰਗਲ। ਵਧੇਰੇ ਉੱਚਾਈ ਵਾਲੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਦੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਉੱਚ ਅਕਸ਼ਾਂਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਰਗੇ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਵੀ ਜੰਗਲ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਤ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਸਮਾਜ ਅਤੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਸਕਾਰਾਤਮਕ ਅਤੇ ਨਕਾਰਾਤਮਕ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।[8] ਜੰਗਲ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਲਈ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਯਾਤਰੀ ਆਕਰਸ਼ਣ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜੰਗਲ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਹਤ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜੰਗਲਾਤ ਦੇ ਸਰੋਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਟਾਈ ਸਮੇਤ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆਂ, ਜੰਗਲਾਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਈਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਕਾਰਾਤਮਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਜੰਗਲ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ 800 ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਜੰਗਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਚਲਤ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਵਿਆਪੀ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੋਈ ਸਹੀ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।[4] ਭਾਵੇਂ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੌਜੂਦਗੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਣਹੋਂਦ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਵੀ ਜੰਗਲ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਇਥੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੁੱਖ ਉੱਗਦੇ ਸਨ, ਅਤੇ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਰੱਖਤ ਉਗਾਏਗਾ,[9] ਜਾਂ ਬਨਸਪਤੀ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਜੋਂ ਮਨੋਨੀਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਵੇ।[10][11]
