ਗੋਟਲੀਏਬ ਵਿਲਹੇਲਮ ਲੇਟਨਰ

ਲੇਟਨਰ 26 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿਚ, ਮੁਕਾਮੀ ਲਿਬਾਸ ਪਹਿਨੇ ਹੋਏ ਦਰਦਸਤਾਨ ਘੁੰਮਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ। ਅਸਟਰੀਨਡ ਮੈਗਜ਼ੀਨ 1894.ਤੋਂ ਲਈ

ਗੋਟਲੀਏਬ ਵਿਲਹੇਲਮ ਲੇਟਨਰ (ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ: Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner ਜਾਂ Gottlieb William Leitner) ਐਮ ਏ, ਪੀ ਐਚ ਡੀ, ਐਲ ਐਲ ਡੀ, ਡੀ ਓ ਐਲ (14 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ 1840 - 22 ਮਾਰਚ 1899) ਇਕ ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਪੂਰਬਵਾਦੀ ਸੀ।

ਮੁਢਲਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਤੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ

ਗੋਟਲੀਏਬ ਹੰਗਰੀ ਵਿਚ 14 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ 1840 ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ।ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਮੈਰੀ ਹੇਨਰੀਟਜ਼ ਹਰਜ਼ਬਰਗ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਲਿਓਪੋਲਡ ਸਫ਼ੀਰ ਗੋਟਲੀਏਬ ਦੀ ਛੋਟੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਹੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਜੋਹਾਨ ਮਾਰੀਟਜ਼ ਲੇਈਟਨਰ ਨਾਲ਼ ਸ਼ਾਦੀ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਸੀ। ਗੋਟਲੀਈਬ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭੈਣ ਇਲੈਜ਼ਬੈਥ (ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਸਿਆਸਤਦਾਨ ਲਿਓਪੋਲਡ ਆਮੇਰੀ ਦੀਮਾਂ) ਇਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਲੇਟਨਰ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਪਹਿਚਾਣੇ ਜਾਣੇ ਲੱਗੇ।

ਲੇਟਨਰ ਨੇ ਬਚਪਨ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਹਿਰੀ ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ ਸੀ। 8 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ [ਕਾਂਸਤਾਂਤਨੋਪਲ] ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ ਤਾ ਜੋ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਤੇ ਅਰਬੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਕੇ ਤੇ ਦਸ ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਤਕ ਉਹ ਤੁਰਕੀ, ਅਰਬੀ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤੀਆਂ ਯੂਰਪੀ ਜ਼ਬਾਨਾਂ ਰਵਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ। 15 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਕਰੀਮਿਆ ਵਿਚ ਕਰਨਲ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਅਹੁਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਕਮਿਸਾਰੀਅਤ ਵਿਚ ਦੋਭਾਸ਼ੀਏ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਨਿਯੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਜਦੋਂ ਕਰੀਮਿਆਈ ਜੰਗ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋਈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਪਾਦਰੀ ਬਣਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਕਿੰਗਜ਼ ਕਾਲਜ ਲੰਡਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਦਾਖਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।

ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਲੇਟਨਰ ਨੇ ਮੁਸਲਿਮ ਮੁਲਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੌਰੇ ਦੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਇਕ ਮੁਸਲਿਮ ਨਾਂ ਅਬਦੁਰ ਰਸ਼ੀਦ ਸੱਯਾਹ (سیاح) ਅਪਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ। ਸੱਯਾਹ ਅਰਬੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਕਰਨੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਇੱਕ ਲੇਟਨਰ ਕੋਈ ਪੰਜਾਹ ਜ਼ਬਾਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਕਫ਼ ਸੀ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕਈਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਰਵਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ। 19 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਅਰਬੀ, ਤੁਰਕੀ ਤੇ ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਯੂਨਾਨੀ ਦੇ ਲੈਕਚਰਰ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਨਿਯੁਕਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਤੇ 23 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਕਿੰਗਜ਼ ਕਾਲਜ ਵਿਚ ਅਰਬੀ ਤੇ ਇਸਲਾਮੀ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੋਫ਼ੈਸਰ ਨਿਯੁਕਤ ਹੋਇਆ।

ਇਸ ਦੇ 3 ਸਾਲ ਬਾਅਦ 1864 ਵਿਚ ਲੇਟਨਰ ਗੌਰਮਿੰਟ ਕਾਲਜ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਲਾਹੌਰ, ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ (ਉਸ ਵਕਤ ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਹਿੰਦ) ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀਪਲ ਬਣਿਆ। ਉਹ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਵਿਚ ਪੇਸ਼ ਪੇਸ਼ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਕਈ ਸਕੂਲ, ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ, ਅਵਾਮੀ ਲਾਇਬ੍ਰੇਰੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਵਿਦਿਅਕ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਾਨੀ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਬਰ-ਏ-ਸਗ਼ੀਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਤਹਿਜ਼ੀਬਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਧਿਅਨ ਕ‏ਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਹ ਉਰਦੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੋ ਜਿਲਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਇਸਲਾਮ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਲਿਖ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਕੰਮ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੌਲਵੀ ਕਰੀਮ ਉੱਦ ਦੀਨ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਲਈ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਉਸ ਵਕਤ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਸਕੂਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਿਲਾਈ ਇੰਸਪੈਕਟਰ ਸਨ। ਇਹ ਦੋ ਜਿਲਦਾਂ 1871 ਤੇ 1876 ਵਿੱਚ ਛੁਪ ਚੁੱਕੀਆਂ ਸਨ।

ਉਹ 1886 ਵਿਚ ਇੰਡੀਅਨ ਸਿਵਲ ਸਰਵਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਰਿਟਾਇਰ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ।

ਯੂਰਪ ਵਾਪਸੀ

ਲੇਟਨਰ ਯੂਰਪ ਵਿਚ 1870 ਦੇ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਦੇ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਤ ਆਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਹੀਡਲਬਰਗ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ (ਜਰਮਨੀ) ਤੋਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖ ਸਕੇ। ਇਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਸਟਰੀਆ, ਪਰੂਸ਼ਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਹਕੂਮਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਹੁਣ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ, ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੇ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਲਈ ਯੂਰਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਕਾਇਮ ਕਰੇ। 1881 ਵਿਚ ਇੰਗਲੈਂਡ ਪਰਤਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਅਦਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਖੋਜ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਅਤੇ 1883 ਵਿੱਚ ਵੋਕਿੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਖਾਲੀ ਰਾਇਲ ਡਰਾਮੇਟਿਕ ਕਾਲਜ ਤੇ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਪਈ, ਇਹ ਇਮਾਰਤ ਉਸ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਐਨ ਅਨੁਕੂਲ ਸੀ।

ਮੁਸਲਿਮ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਲਾਭ ਲਈ, ਲੇਟਨਰ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਮਸਜਿਦ ਦੀ ਉਸਾਰੀ ਕਰਵਾਈ। ਸ਼ਾਹਜਹਾਂ ਮਸਜਿਦ 1889 ਵਿੱਚ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਯੂਰਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਣੀਆਂ ਪਹਿਲੀਆਂ ਮਸਜਿਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਟੇਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਇਹ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਕਾਇਮ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਇੰਡੋ-ਸੇਰੇਸੈਨਿਕ ਸ਼ੈਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਣਾਈ ਗਈ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਸ਼ਾਹਜਹਾਂ, ਭੋਪਾਲ ਦੀ ਬੇਗਮ (1868–1901) ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।

ਸ਼ਾਹਜਹਾਂ ਬੇਗਮ ਨੇ ਮਸਜਿਦ ਦੀ ਇਮਾਰਤ ਲਈ ਵੱਡੀ ਰਕਮ ਦਾਨ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਲੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਵਿਖੇ “ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਐਂਗਲੋ-ਓਰੀਐਂਟਲ ਕਾਲਜ” ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾਇਆ, ਜੋ ਅੱਗੇ ਚੱਲ ਕੇ ਅਲੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਮੁਸਲਿਮ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਬਦੀਲ ਹੋਈ।

ਬਰੂਕਵੁੱਡ ਕਬਰਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੇਟਨਰ ਦੀ ਕਬਰ

ਲੇਟਨਰ ਬਰੂਕਵੁੱਡ ਕਬਰਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਫ਼ਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਜੋ ਵੋਕਿੰਗ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੈ। ਮਕਬਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਕੁਤਬੇ ਦੀ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਇਬਾਰਤ ਦਰਜ‏‏ ਹੈ। ਜ਼ਿਕਰਯੋਗ ਬਾਤ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਜਰਮਨ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਲੇਟਨਰ ਦੀ ਕਬਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਲਾਤੀਨੀ ਲਿੱਪੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਬੀ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਦਾ ਮਫ਼ਹੂਮ ਇਹ ਏ ਕਿ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਦੌਲਤ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ:
