ਨਵਾਰ (ਨਿਵਾਰ, ਜਾਂ ਨੁਵਾਰ ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) [1] [2] ਇੱਕ ਮੋਟੀ ਧਾਗਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਬੁਣੀ ਹੋਈ ਵਧਰੀ ਵਰਗੀ ਪੱਟੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸੂਤ ਦੇ ਧਾਗਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਬਣੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੰਜੇ ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਬੁਣਨ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਨਵਾਰ ਇੱਕ ਟੈਕਸਟਾਈਲ ਉਤਪਾਦ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਟੇਪ ਲੂਮਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਤੰਗ-ਚੌੜਾਈ ਵਾਲੇ ਫੈਬਰਿਕ ਦੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। [3] ਬੈਡਨ ਹੈਨਰੀ ਪਾਵੇਲ ਨੇ ਇਸਨੂੰ "ਵਿਆਪਕ ਮੋਟੀ ਟੇਪ", ਜੇਲ ਉਦਯੋਗ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਉਤਪਾਦ ਕਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਆਪਣੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੈਂਡਬੁੱਕ ਆਫ਼ ਦ ਮੈਨੂਫੈਕਚਰਜ਼ ਐਂਡ ਆਰਟਸ ਆਫ਼ ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ, ਪਾਵੇਲ ਨੇ ਨਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ "ਟੇਪ, ਰੱਸੀਆਂ, ਅਤੇ ਫੁਟਕਲ ਸੂਤੀ ਉਤਪਾਦਾਂ" ਦੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ। [4]

ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿੱਚ 15ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਨੇ "ਰੇਸ਼ਮ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਟਿਨ ਅਤੇ ਨਵਾਰੀ ਬਿਸਤਰੇ" ਨੂੰ ਲਗਜ਼ਰੀ ਵਸਤੂਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ। [5] ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਅਮੀਰ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਿਸਤਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਸਕਦੇ ਸਨ, ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਗਰੀਬ ਘਾਹ ਦੀ ਰੱਸੀ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨਗੇ। [5] ਬੈਡਨ ਹੈਨਰੀ ਪਾਵੇਲ, 19ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹੋਏ, ਨਿਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਉੱਚ ਕੀਮਤ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। [6]
ਨਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਬੁਣਾਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਮਹਿਲਾ ਕਾਰੀਗਰਾਂ, ਪੇਂਡੂ ਘਰੇਲੂ ਉਦਯੋਗਾਂ, [7] ਅਤੇ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਉਦਯੋਗਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੈਦੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਕੰਮ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਸਰੋਤ ਸੀ। [8] [9]

ਭਾਵੇਂ ਪਾਵੇਲ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਉਤਪਾਦਨ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, [6] ਨਿਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਤੱਕ ਸੀਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਰਾਜਾਂ ਦੇ ਗਜ਼ਟਰ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਹਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਵਾਰ ਬੁਣਾਈ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਚਲਣ ਦਾ ਵਰਣਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। [10] [11] [12]

17ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਤੱਕ, ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੇਂਡੂ ਬੁਣਕਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਪਾਹ ਦੇ ਉਤਪਾਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਣੀ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੀ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਾਦਰਾਂ, ਖੇਸ, ਰੱਸੇ, ਨਵਾਰ, ਦਰੀਆਂਅਤੇ ਫਰਨੀਚਰ ਆਦਿ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਸਨ। [13] "ਆਮਦਨ ਲਈ ਦਰੀਆਂ ਬੁਣਨਾ" ਸਿਰਲੇਖ ਦੇ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਦੇ ਨਤੀਜਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪੇਂਡੂ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਗੁਜਰ ਲਈ ਕਈ ਕੁਝ ਬੁਣਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ "ਆਸਨ", "ਫੁੱਟ ਮੈਟ," "ਝੋਲੇ," ਅਤੇ "ਨਵਾਰ" ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ। [14]
