ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਚੰਗੀ ਸੋਚ ਹੈ (thought well of it)।"[2]
ਉਹ ਦਾ ਨਿਊ ਯੌਰਕ ਟਾਈਮਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "most political and most moving novel"[3] ਇਸ ਉੱਪਰ ਦਾ ਨਿਊ ਯੌਰਕ ਰਿਵੀਊ ਆਫ ਬੁਕਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਉੱਪਰ "elegant", "fastidious" ਅਤੇ "cultivated upper class" ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਦੱਸਿਆ।[4]ਦਾ ਹਡਸਨ ਰਿਵੀਊ ਨੇ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਬਾਰੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "gives scarcely any pleasure in the reading but which one is pleased to have read nonetheless"[5] ਨਾਵਲ ਨੇ 1980 ਵਿੱਚ ਸੈਂਟਰਲ ਨਿਊਜ਼ ਏਜੰਸੀ ਲਿਟਰੇਰੀ ਅਵਾਰਡ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ।
