ਭਾਰਤ ਦਾ ਸਮਰਾਟ ਜਾਂ ਮਹਾਰਾਣੀ ਇੱਕ ਸਿਰਲੇਖ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ 1 ਮਈ 1876 (ਰਾਇਲ ਟਾਈਟਲ ਐਕਟ 1876 ਦੇ ਨਾਲ) ਤੋਂ 22 ਜੂਨ 1948 ਤੱਕ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਰਾਜ ਉੱਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂਸੱਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਮੁਖੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਦਰਸਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਜਾਂ ਮਹਾਰਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਮੁਦਰਾ 'ਤੇ, ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਇਮਾਰਤਾਂ, ਰੇਲਵੇ ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨਾਂ, ਅਦਾਲਤਾਂ, ਬੁੱਤਾਂ ਆਦਿ 'ਤੇ ਦਿਖਾਈ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਗਵਰਨਰ-ਜਨਰਲ, ਰਾਜਕੁਮਾਰਾਂ, ਰਾਜਪਾਲਾਂ, ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨਰਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਮਰਾਟ ਜਾਂ ਮਹਾਰਾਣੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਉੱਤਰਾਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਫ਼ਾਦਾਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਹੁੰਆਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਦਰਬਾਰਾਂ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ।[1][2][3]
22 ਜੂਨ 1948 ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸੁਤੰਤਰਤਾ ਐਕਟ 1947 ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਸਿਰਲੇਖ ਨੂੰ ਖਤਮ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਤਹਿਤ ਜਾਰਜ VI ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਘੋਸ਼ਣਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ "ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਾਟ" ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਬੋਧਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਸ਼ੈਲੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਰਵਾਇਤੀ ਸਿਰਲੇਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹਟਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਸੀ। ਇਹ 1947 ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਰਤ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਵੰਡੇ ਗਏ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਦੇ ਸਿਰਲੇਖਿਕ ਮੁਖੀ ਬਣਨ ਤੋਂ ਲਗਭਗ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਲ ਬਾਅਦ ਸੀ। 1950 ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਗਣਰਾਜ ਅਤੇ 1956 ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸਲਾਮਿਕ ਗਣਰਾਜ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਤਮ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
