ਸੈਟੇਸ਼ੀਆ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਮੈਮਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਵਰਗ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੱਛੀ ਵਰਗੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਮ ਵੇਲ੍ਹ, ਡਾਲਫਿਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਸੂਰ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹਨ। Cetus ਲਾਤੀਨੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ' ਵੇਲ੍ਹ' ਦੇ ਅਰਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੀਵਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਨਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਅਰਥ, ਵੱਡਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਜਾਨਵਰ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਆਮ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਨਿਰੁਕਤੀ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਯੂਨਾਨੀ κῆτος (ਕੇਟੋਸ) ਤੋਂ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਭਾਵ ਵੇਲ੍ਹ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਮੱਛੀਆਂ ਜਾਂ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਲਈ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਸੇਟੋਲੋਜੀ ਸੈਟੇਸ਼ੀਅਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਖਾ ਹੈ। ਵੇਲ੍ਹ ਮਛੀ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਚੀਨ ਪੂਰਵਜ, ਬਾਸਿਲੋਸੌਰੁਸ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਰੀਂਗਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜੀਵ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਉਸਦੇ ਨਕਾਰਾ ਅੰਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਪਛਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਏ ਗਏ।[2]

ਪਥਰਾਟ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਸੁਝਾਅ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਸੈਟੇਸ਼ੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪੂਰਵਜ ਦਰਿਆਈ ਘੋੜਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਸੀ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ 50 ਲੱਖ ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਚਾਗੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ ਵਾਤਾਵਰਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ।[3][4][5][6]
