1770 ਦਾ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਦਾ ਮਹਾਨ ਅਕਾਲ (Eng: Great Bengal Famine of 1770, ਬੰਗਾਲੀ: 76-ਦੇ ਮੰਬਨਟਰ, ਚਹਿਤੋਰੋਰ ਮੋਨਨੋਤੌਰ, 'ਦ ਫੈਮੀਨ ਆਫ '76) 1769 ਅਤੇ 1773 (ਬੰਗਾਲੀ ਕੈਲੰਡਰ ਵਿੱਚ 1176 ਤੋਂ 1180) ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਕਾਲ਼ ਪਿਆ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਬਿਹਾਰ ਦੇ ਗੰਗਾ ਦੇ ਹੇਠਲੇ ਖੇਤਰ' ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਿਆ ਸੀ। ਬੰਗਾਲ ਖੇਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤਕਰੀਬਨ ਇੱਕ ਕਰੋੜ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ[1] ਵਾਰਨ ਹੇਸਟਿੰਗਸ ਦੀ 1772 ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵੀ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਬਾਦੀ ਦਾ ਤੀਜਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਮੌਤ ਭੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਸੀ।[2]

ਇਹ ਅਕਾਲ 18 ਵੀਂ ਅਤੇ 19 ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਕਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਭੁੱਖਾਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਮਹਾਂਮਾਰੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਉਪ-ਮਹਾਂਦੀਪ ਨੂੰ ਤਬਾਹ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਹ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਈਸਟ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਾਰਨਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਨੀਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਮੇਲ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੈ।[3][4] ਮੱਧਕਾਲੀਨ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਜਰਨਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਨੀਤਾ ਦਾਮੋਦਰਨ ਮਾਈਕ ਡੇਵਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਦਸਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਭਾਰਤ ਅਤੇ ਆਇਰਲੈਂਡ ਜਿਹੇ ਬਸਤੀਵਾਸੀ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਮਾਰਕੀਟ ਅਰਥਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗਾਂ ਵਜੋਂ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਨਤੀਜੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਕਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਤਬਾਹੀ ਸਨ। ਅਕਾਲ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ 1769 ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਅਸਫਲ ਮਾਨਸੂਨ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸੋਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਦੋ ਨਿਰੰਤਰ ਚਾਵਲ ਫਸਲਾਂ ਅਸਫ਼ਲ ਹੋਈਆਂ।[5] ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਈਸਟ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਦੇ 1765 ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਪੇਂਡੂ-ਜਨਸੰਖਿਆ ਦੇ ਆਰਥਿਕ ਵਸੀਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਰਾਬ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ-ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੁਰੀ ਬੁਨਿਆਦੀ ਨਿਵੇਸ਼, ਜੰਗ ਤੋਂ ਤਬਾਹੀ ਅਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਈਸਟ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੋਸ਼ਣ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਟੈਕਸ ਮਾਲੀਆ ਦੀ ਵੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਪਾਲਸੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਨੀਤੀਆਂ ਨੋਬਲ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਜਿੱਤਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਅਰਥਸ਼ਾਸਤਰੀ ਅਮਰਤਯ ਸੇਨ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬਣੀ ਵਿਨਾਸ਼ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਵਰਣਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।[6][7]

ਬੰਗਾਲੀ ਨਾਮ "ਛੀਟੋਰੇਰ ਮੋਨਨੋਤੋਤਰ" ਬੰਗਾਲੀ ਕੈਲੰਡਰ ਸਾਲ 1176 ਤੋਂ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਅਨਾਜ ਲਈ ਸ਼ਬਦ ("ਛੀਟੋਰ" - "76", "ਮੌਂਨੋਤੋਆਰ" - ਬੰਗਾਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ "ਕਾਲ")।[8]

ਮਨੀ ਜੱਫਰ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਮੁਨੀ ਬੇਗਨ ਨੇ ਦੋਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਰੀਜੈਂਟ ਕੀਤੀ।

ਹੈਨਰੀ ਸਿੰਗਲਟਨ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰਲਸ ਨਾਈਟ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਛਾਪੇ ਗਏ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਟ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਕਾਰਸੀਟੀ ਇਨ ਇੰਡੀਆ, 1794, ਇੱਕ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਔਰਤ ਨਾਲ ਦੋ ਮਾਲਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੌਦੇਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਬਦਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ੇ ਦੀ ਪੇਸ਼ਕਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ

ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਇਲਾਕਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਕਾਲ ਨੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਬਿਹਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਦੇ ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਰਾਜਾਂ' ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾਇਆ, ਪਰ ਭੁੱਖਮਰੀ ਵੀ ਉੜੀਸਾ, ਝਾਰਖੰਡ ਅਤੇ ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਬੰਗਲਾਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਫੈਲ ਗਈ। ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਮਾੜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਵਾਲੇ ਇਲਾਕਿਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬੀਰਭੂਮ ਅਤੇ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁਰਸ਼ਿਦਾਬਾਦ, ਬਿਹਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਿਰਹੂਟ, ਚੰਪਾਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਟਿਆਹ।

ਫਸਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਸ਼ਕ ਕਮੀ, ਆਮ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝੀ ਗਈ, 1768 ਵਿੱਚ ਆਈ ਅਤੇ 1769 ਦੇ ਅਖੀਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਰ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਸਥਿਤੀਆਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਸਦਾ ਪਾਲਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਸਾਲ 1769 ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਲਾਨਾ ਦੱਖਣੀ-ਪੂਰਬੀ ਮਾਨਸੂਨ ਦੀ ਅਸਫ਼ਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਇੱਕ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਸੋਕੇ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੇਂਡੂ ਤਣਾਅ ਵਿੱਚ ਖ਼ਤਰਨਾਕ ਰਿਪੋਰਟਾਂ ਆ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਇਹ, ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ, ਕੰਪਨੀ ਅਫਸਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਅਣਦੇਖੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ।

1770 ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੁੱਖਮਰੀ ਹੋਈ, ਅਤੇ 1770 ਦੇ ਮੱਧ ਤੱਕ ਭੁੱਖਮਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਮੌਤਾਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਪੈਮਾਨੇ ਤੇ ਵਾਪਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਵਿਚ 1770, ਇੱਕ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡੀ ਮਹਾਮਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਸਮਾਲ ਪੌਕਸ ਵਿੱਚ raged, Murshidabad ਅਤੇ ਹੱਤਿਆ 63,000 ਇਸ ਦੇ ਵਾਸੀ, ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਣ Nawab ਨਾਜ਼ਿਮ ਸੈਫ਼ ਉਦ-Daulah Najabat ਅਲੀ ਖਾਨ ਬਹਾਦਰ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਲਿਆ ਤੇ 10 ਮਾਰਚ 1770 ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ। ਉਹ ਸੀ, ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਭਰਾ ਨੂੰ ਅਸ਼ਰਫ ਅਲੀ ਖਾਨ, ਜੋ ਵੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਤੱਕ ਛੋਟੇ ਪੌਕਸ ਦੋ ਹਫ਼ਤੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਤਾਜਪੋਸ਼ੀ ਸੀ।

ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ 1770 ਵਿੱਚ ਚੰਗੀ ਬਾਰਸ਼ ਨੇ ਚੰਗੀ ਫ਼ਸਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਥੰਮ ਗਿਆ। ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ, ਅਗਲੇ ਕੁਝ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਰ ਛੋਟਾਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਕੁੱਲ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾ ਵਧ ਗਈ। ਤਕਰੀਬਨ 10 ਮਿਲੀਅਨ ਲੋਕ, ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਖੇਤਰ ਦੀ ਤਕਰੀਬਨ ਇੱਕ ਤਿਹਾਈ ਆਬਾਦੀ, ਅਨਾਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੌਤ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਅਨੁਮਾਨ ਹੈ।[9][10]

ਅਕਾਲ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਟੇ ਵਜੋਂ, ਵੱਡੇ ਇਲਾਕਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਸਾਂ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਜੰਗਲ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਪਸੀ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਬਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਰਵਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ। ਕਈ ਖੇਤਾ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਖੇਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ- ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਬੀਰਭੂਮ, ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਪਸ ਪਰਤਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਲਗਪਗ ਦੁੱਗਣਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। 1772 ਤੋਂ, ਲੁਟੇਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਠੱਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੈਂਡ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਤਾ ਬਣ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ 1890 ਦੇ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ ਦਮਨਕਾਰੀ ਕਿਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆਂਦਾ ਗਿਆ।
