ਭੂਟਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਘਾਟੀਆਂ ਭੂਟਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹਿਮਾਲਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਕਰੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਗਲੇਸ਼ੀਅਲ ਪਿਘਲਣ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਨਸੂਨ ਦੀ ਬਾਰਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਖੁਆਈਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਭੂਟਾਨ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਹਿਮਾਲਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੂਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਘਿਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਇਸਦੀ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਆਬਾਦੀ ਘਾਟੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਨੀਵੇਂ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੇਂਦਰਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਅੰਦਰੂਨੀ ਹਿਮਾਲਿਆ ਦੇ ਦੱਖਣ ਵੱਲ ਰੁਖਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵੱਖ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ।[1][2][3][4][5]: 72, 84, 91 [6] ਭੂਟਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਵਾਜਾਈ ਦੇ ਆਧੁਨਿਕੀਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ, ਇੱਕ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਰਾਜਮਾਰਗ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਸਮੇਤ, ਇੱਕ ਘਾਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਜੀ ਤੱਕ ਯਾਤਰਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।[7] ਪੱਛਮੀ ਘਾਟੀਆਂ ਮੱਧ ਭੂਟਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਲੇ ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪੂਰਬ ਵੱਲ ਬੰਨ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਦੋ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਨਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀਆਂ, ਮੋ ਛੂ ( ਸੰਕੋਸ਼ ਨਦੀ ) ਅਤੇ ਦ੍ਰਾਂਗਮੇ ਛੂ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਟਰਸ਼ੈੱਡ ਬਣਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਕੇਂਦਰੀ ਘਾਟੀਆਂ ਪੂਰਬ ਤੋਂ ਡੋਂਗਾ ਰੇਂਜ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵੱਖ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ।[1][8] [9] ਵਧੇਰੇ ਅਲੱਗ-ਥਲੱਗ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਘਾਟੀਆਂ ਕਈ ਛੋਟੇ, ਵੱਖਰੇ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਈ ਸਮੂਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।[10] ਇਸ ਇਕੱਲਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ, ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਘਾਟੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਥਾਨਕ ਰੱਖਿਅਕ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਹਨ।[5] : 72 [11] : 9
ਭੂਟਾਨ ਦੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ, ਇਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਘਾਟੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਨੀਵੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਮੀਨਾਂ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਨਿਯੰਤਰਣ ਦਾ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਸਨ। 17ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੂਟਾਨ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਭਰਨ ਦੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ, ਸ਼ਬਦਰੁੰਗ ਨਗਾਵਾਂਗ ਨਾਮਗਿਆਲ ਨੇ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਘਾਟੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਤਿੱਬਤ ਦੇ ਹਮਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਡਜ਼ੋਂਗ ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਬਣਾਏ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਲੈਫਟੀਨੈਂਟ, ਟਰੋਂਗਸਾ ਦਾ ਪੇਨਲੋਪ, ਚੋਗਯਾਲ ਮਿੰਜੂਰ ਟੈਂਪਾ, ਨਵੀਂ ਧਰਮ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਲਈ ਕੇਂਦਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਭੂਟਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਘਾਟੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤਣ ਲਈ ਗਿਆ।[5] : 31 ਨਤੀਜੇ ਵਜੋਂ, ਹਰੇਕ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਘਾਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਡਜ਼ੋਂਗ ਕਿਲਾ ਹੈ।[12][13][14]
ਪੱਛਮੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੱਧ ਭੂਟਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੁੱਕੀਆਂ, ਸਾਦੀਆਂ-ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਘਾਟੀਆਂ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਤਨ ਸੰਘਣੀ ਆਬਾਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਤੀਬਰਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਸ਼ਤ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਗਿੱਲੀਆਂ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਘਾਟੀਆਂ, ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ, ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਿਨਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਪੁੱਟੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਅਲੱਗ-ਥਲੱਗ ਬਸਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ, ਉੱਚੀਆਂ, ਤੰਗ ਘਾਟੀਆਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।[5] : 181 [11][12] ਪੱਛਮੀ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ, ਘਾਟੀਆਂ ਉੱਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੌਂ, ਆਲੂ ਅਤੇ ਡੇਅਰੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕੇਲੇ, ਸੰਤਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਚੌਲ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।[12]
