ਬਿਧਨ ਚੰਦਰ ਰਾਏ ਅਵਾਰਡ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ 1962 ਵਿੱਚ ਮੈਡੀਕਲ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਆਫ਼ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਡਾ. ਬੀ.ਸੀ. ਰਾਏ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹਰ ਸਾਲ 1 ਜੁਲਾਈ, ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਦਿਵਸ ' ਤੇ ਨਵੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਵੀ ਹੈ।

ਇਹ ਅਵਾਰਡ ਹਰ ਸਾਲ ਹੇਠ ਲਿਖੀਆਂ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਣੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ: ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੇ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਦੀ ਸਟੇਟਮੈਨਸ਼ਿਪ, ਮੈਡੀਕਲ ਮੈਨ-ਕਮ-ਸਟੇਟਸਮੈਨ, ਉੱਘੇ ਮੈਡੀਕਲ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ, ਫਿਲਾਸਫੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਘੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ, ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਘੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਲਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਘੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ।[1]

ਇਹ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ 1973 ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਤਤਕਾਲੀ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਵੀ.ਵੀ. ਗਿਰੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵਿਲਿੰਗਡਨ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ (ਹੁਣ ਰਾਮ ਮਨੋਹਰ ਲੋਹੀਆ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ), ਨਵੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਦੀਪ ਮੁਖਰਜੀ, FRCS ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
