ਅਕਰਾ ਘਾਨਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਦੀ ਅਬਾਦੀ 2012 ਵਿੱਚ ਲਗਭਗ 2,291,352 ਹੈ।[3] ਇਹ ਵਡੇਰੇ ਅਕਰਾ ਖੇਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਅਕਰਾ ਮਹਾਂਨਗਰੀ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੀ ਵੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਹੈ।[6] ਅਕਰਾ ਇੱਕ ਵਡੇਰੇ ਮਹਾਂਨਗਰੀ ਖੇਤਰ, ਵਡੇਰਾ ਅਕਰਾ ਮਹਾਂਨਗਰੀ ਖੇਤਰ (GAMA), ਦਾ ਵੀ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਹੈ[7] ਜਿਸਦੀ ਅਬਾਦੀ ਲਗਭਗ 40 ਲੱਖ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਘਾਨਾ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਅਬਾਦੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਹਾਂਨਗਰੀ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਹੈ[5] ਅਤੇ ਅਫ਼ਰੀਕਾ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਰ੍ਹਵਾਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ।
